What a Boho Wedding Looks Like: as seen in Green Wedding Shoes

Did you see our feature in Green Wedding Shoes? This was such a fun shoot put together by so many talented, wonderful women!

We love being able to make the wedding dreams of our couples come to life, but we really love it when we can flex every fiber of our creative muscles and put together stunning, impactful projects.

In this post, we thought it would be nice to just talk about the shoot and the boho aesthetic, and how we and the other artists and designers carved out this bohemian jewel.

What is Boho?

Boho is a term that gets thrown around the wedding and fashion industry a lot, and for those of you who don’t know, it’s short form for “bohemian”. But it’s also so much more than that. The boho aesthetic and the boho lifestyle are characterized by simplicity and unconventionality. It stresses love and truth and intimacy, which is why this elopement inspiration could not have been more perfect.

We took a smaller, non-traditional space like the Army & Navy Building, and, with some beautiful décor and beautiful people, made it into the romantic, intimate, pinnacle-of-envy that it became in this shoot.

Everything from the moody lighting, tufted rugs, and desert and tropical plants was meticulously planned out to help this space reach the height of bohemian glamour.

Boho Flowers

Here’s the really sexy stuff. Look at these stunning, unconventional florals! It’s not every day that we get to really play with our designs without being pigeonholed into using hydrangea and garden roses. Don’t get us wrong, we love our classic wedding flowers—like have you seen Juliet roses?—but we love, even more, being able to use plants and flowers that no one would consider using and turning them into a statement bouquet.

This bouquet is actually pretty simple, in true boho-style, with the main components being king protea and pampas grass. That’s really it! Then we went in and detailed with splashes of gold and copper to really amp up the artistry and tie in with the metallics in the room, jewelry, and the bride’s makeup. And of course, we used the most perfect, metallic-sequined ribbon because if you can find a way to throw some sparkle or glitter or sequins on anything, we are HERE. FOR. IT.

We also, as you might have noticed, turned basic Boston ferns into glamorous planters with macramé and dashes of gold. A few simple additions and then BAM look at the statement they make! (Look at the sparkle!)

There’s also some extra little scenic details like the protea head and driftwood arranged in a light box that adds a little modernity, and we got to feature our Little Prick Planter in a bronzed planter to really emphasize that Saharan desert feel.

Boho Style and Décor

The teams of stylists and designers sprayed this shoot from top to bottom in creative juices (yes, it sounds disgusting, but it could not be a more appropriate description). And, can we talk about the models…if they were really getting married, it would just be unfair to everyone ever.

We also need to talk about that bride's hair because all of it (except for her top bun) was supplied by Shannon Marie Hair. Yeah. Let that sink in. It's not even real! Can you even?

The Bohemian Revolution

We would love to see more of this aesthetic pushed into the industry here in Edmonton. The carefree, romanticism of the boho style is something fun and beautiful for us to embrace, and for something that stresses love and intimacy, could anything be more appropriate for your wedding day?

The secret to boho styling is consistency and cohesion. When we were styling, we didn’t just throw a pile of vintage throw pillows into the middle of a room and pray to the spirits of Morocco that this shoot would look good. The teams found eclectic, Persian-style pieces in moodier colour palettes and tied those elements into everything from the rugs to the pillows to the brass candles to the planters to the clothing to the makeup.

Think of it like organized chaos. The room looks haphazard, but it also looks purposeful. It’s a sensory explosion, but nothing is competing for attention or pulling focus from the couple. If you’ve ever been to a Cirque du Soleil show, you’ll notice that there’s always a main story, a main focus, but no matter where you look, there’s always something to see and it adds to the whole picture. It’s like creating and capturing an essence of magic in one room, in one picture frame. And we could not be more in love with the end result.
